SAD in the Winter Could Seasonal Affective Disorder Be Disrupting the Lives of Northeastern Students? Becky Venne, a 31-year-old Northeastern graduate student, says she doesn’t socialize much in the winter. In fact, she claims that she finds it hard to get out of bed and spends most of her day watching T.V., satisfying her cravings for carbohydrates and starchy foods. We’ve all experienced it at some point or another. The weather gets colder, the days become shorter, and no matter how much sleep you had the night before, you still feel tired. These, along with weight gain and feelings of sadness and lethargy are common during the winter months. But what happens when these feelings become debilitating, and begin affecting one’s personal life? â€Å"There is a period of time that I think most people who have SAD realize there is more to it,† said Venne. â€Å"It wasn’t until I had some quiet time that I realized this isn’t normal.† What Venne is referring to is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mood disorder that more commonly affects people of all ages in the Northern regions of the Unites States. Although most people experience some forms of depression during the winter months, SAD is diagnosed when this change in mood becomes debilitating, causing a sever impact on the daily life of the individual. Venne says she was diagnosed with SAD about five years ago, shortly after she moved to Boston. She describes her diagnoses as a long, drawn out process, jumping from doctor to doctor, until finally she found the right psychopharmacologist. Dr. Elisa Castillo works at the Center For Counseling at Northeastern University, where she works with many students who have been diagnosed with SAD. She explained that there are... ...the answer to SAD? Castillo suggests seeking help through Counseling, such as the Center for Counseling and Student Development. â€Å"The counseling center can provide support, help diagnose SAD, help with referrals to psychiatrists that have experience in this area and follow up with students to make sure the treatment is working,† said Castillo. Castillo also says that it is important to learn how to manage winter, and can be difficult, especially if someone has moved from a warmer climate to Boston. She recommends finding ways to exercise, socialize, and learn how to have fun both indoors and out. Venne agrees that it is important to find help if a person is experiencing symptoms of SAD. â€Å"Once I was able to realize what the problem was, I was able gain some sort of control,† said Venne. â€Å"I just take one day at a time, and know that summer is on its way.†

Does one ever realize in what ways they are contributing to air pollution? Air pollution is environmentally a global catastrophe. However, the human population does not have the correct knowledge of how to help the environment from these harmful pollutions. How does the human population help stop contributing to air pollution? Air pollution is a persistent problem within the United States as well as worldwide. Air pollution is a matter in which human and animal’s lives are lost. (Quotationspage. com 2007) According to Columbia Encyclopedia (2008), air pollution is contamination of the air by harmful gases in amounts that are known to endanger the health of humans and animals. Combinations of gasoline, automobile emissions, and burning coals and oils all produce several types of air pollutions. According to Encarta. msn. com (2009), fossil fuel emissions are one of the leading causes of air pollution. According to Encarta. msn. com (2009), air pollution can come to our environment in the forms of snow and rain as well. Air pollution can harm a human and/or an animal as well as the environment. Corruption of plants, vegetables, aquatic life, humans, and drinking water are all examples of ways air pollution effects the environment. Air pollution causes respiratory diseases, loss in emotions, fatigue, headaches, loss of sense of direction, and decreased control of muscles and visual sharpness. A child’s lungs and the lung’s capacity are much smaller than a grown adult’s. How does a child react to air pollutants when the child has asthma? Researches Liu, Poon, Chen, Dales, Frescure, Montuschi, Ciabatonni, and Wheeler (2009) conducted a study on how air pollutants such as: sulfuric dioxide and nitrogen oxides, effected children with asthma. The conclusion to their study was significant. While there was a noticeable decrease in the airway function of lungs, there was also an increase of damage done to the child’s airway passage. Global warming exists when greenhouse gases trap heat and sun light in the Earth’s atmosphere. Electrical pollution, when fossil fuels are burned creating energy, is a main source of energy used by humans that causes global warming. veryday fossil fuels are burned to create a source of energy. Therefore, pollution is seeping into the Earth’s atmosphere sickening adults, children, and animals. How can humans attack air pollution? According to Calef and Goble (2007), in 1990 California took its’ approach to zero vehicles on the road that produce vehicle emissions. California Area Resources Board conducted a plan to take all battery operated electric vehicles off the road and replace them with zero emissions vehicles. Today, zero emissions vehicles are known as hybrid cars. California Area Resources Board wanted to make the plan mandatory and sell only the zero emissions vehicles in a set amount of time. However, oil industries and popular automobile manufacturers brought controversy to this factor. The United States did not mandate the plan or follow through with the zero emissions vehicles plan. Now, in the year of 2009, hybrid cars are on the market. Although hybrid vehicles regularly cost about $5,000. 00 more than a battery operated vehicle, it will help contribute to saving the environment. Using environmentally safe products for cleaning and killing pests are ways to improve pollution around your home, work, or school. Throwing away cut grass or trees at a local garbage company saves from waste in the yard. An individual can make a recycling bin at home to make it easier to recycle. Picking up after pets is a chore t hat most individuals cannot somehow manage. However, picking up after pets is a manageable chore and can also help attack air pollution. Carpooling, walking, or taking public transportation to work, home, shopping, or even school are easy ways to reduce vehicle emissions. Drying laundry on the laundry line outside instead of in a gas operated dryer will help conserve energy and decrease gas pollution. Simple tasks can help the environment, why not start now? (Lastormwater. org 2009) A plan is in desire need to help attack air pollution. In order to conduct a plan to attack air pollution, one must have research air pollution. Identifying sources of air pollution is a good start in order to be able to attack air pollution from those sources. Talk with school principals, city council, and representatives with the government about the plan. Because knowledge of air pollution and its effects is rare, develop an educational curriculum in which children will be able to put the attack into action. Develop a presentation for adults about the severity of air pollution and how the adults can contribute to helping. Speak with teachers and parents about the educational curriculum in which the children will be learning about attacking air pollution. Schedule dates and times that one can be available to the school in order to present the educational curriculum about air pollution. Schedule dates and times that one can be available to the city council in order to present the information to the adults. Pass out flyers to local businesses, schools, and homes about both programs. Present all information to both students and adults at all scheduled times. Firstly, I will research information on air pollution, its sources, and all effects to the environment, humans, and animals. Next, I will develop an educational curriculum for both students and adults. Then I will speak with all school principals, the city council, and the government in order to get my plan permitted. I will then speak with teachers and parents to educate hem on the benefits of the educational curriculum about air pollution. Next, I will schedule dates and times that is convenient for me, the city council, and the school’s teachers to present the information. I will speak with the local newspaper in order to get my flyers passed out with the newspapers for each time that I am going to prese nt the information at the city council. I will present all information to both students at schools and the adults at the city council at all scheduled times. Finally, I will conduct a website which will provide all the information that I have conducted and presented. In conclusion to my website, I will make myself available to any school, function, or city council that would like to have me as a guest to present my information. Researching information on air pollution, the sources of air pollution, and the effects of air pollution will be conducted from months one to five. During month’s two to three, I will develop an educational curriculum for both students and adults. Also during month’s two to three, I will speak with all necessary authority in order to get my plan permitted. During month three, I will speak with teachers and parents about the benefits of my educational curriculum. During month four, I will schedule dates and times for my information to be presented to both the city council and the schools in my county. I will also speak with the local newspaper during month four in order to get permission to distribute a flyer included in the newspaper about all scheduled dates and times that I will be holding a presentation. During month five, I will present all information that I have conducted at that specific point. Also during month five, I will establish a website that will hold all the information I have conducted. Students and adults both will benefit from my plan. As said in the above information, people from all around the world are unaware of the effects of air pollution. Presenting this information will help them better understand how air pollution is harming our environment, humans, and the animals that live in our environment. Presenting this information will also put a start to learning more about air pollution. Some teachers may like to include the effects of air pollution and how we can attack air pollution in their own daily or weekly educational curriculum. During month five of my plan, I will be concluding to the conduction of my website that I am available to present my information at any school, function, or city council conference. I am hoping to get a response from my conclusion in order to get the word out about air pollution. Challenges may be an issue before being able to present my information. I may not be permitted by schools to present my information to their students. Parents and teachers may not agree with the education curriculum that I have developed. City council may not see air pollution as a problem to our environment. Individuals may not ask me to participate as a speaker at any functions, schools, or city council conferences. However, I will continue to attempt to get my word out on air pollution if this may occur. In order to have success from my plan on how to attack air pollution, I will need government, global, and our society’s support. The government will also need to troubleshoot the effects of air pollution as well as how to attack air pollution. Globally, individuals should participate in helping to attack air pollution. Globally, individuals should take notice to my plan and establish a plan to present information in their own communities. Society should face the facts about the consequences of air pollution and take in the information on how to attack air pollution. In conclusion the above information, air pollution, again, is a global catastrophe. It has harmed and killed many species of animals. It has also caused humans and animals illnesses. The Islamic financial system response to eliminating or mitigating this difficulty is to make interest free loans and collateral available to the poor. Since Islam requires borrowers and lenders to share the risk of profit or loss equitably, loans are made on a profit/loss sharing basis. Islamic banks, which are the main source of loans, have an important role in meeting the credit needs of the poor and in encouraging and promoting their welfare. Unlikely, Islamic banks are often not meeting these obligations. One of the proposed solutions to overcome this problem is microfinancing, first microcredit institution introduced by Muhammad Yunus, an economist in Bangladesh, in the early 1970s. Yunus started a bank called the Grameen (village) Bank of Microfinance (Hussain et al., 2001). The bank was s tarted based on Yunus belief that credit is a powerful weapon and poor peoples access to credit is crucial for building a just and ethical society where people live with dignity and hope for their future. Yunus (1997) argues that credit unlocks the door to all other important human rights: food, shelter, education, and health care. Some authors such as Al-Harran (1990, 1996, 1999), Ahmed (2001), (2006), Akhtar El-Gamal (1996, 1998), Dhumale and Sapcanin (1998), and others, believe in the great potential of Islamic banking system to involve in microfinance programmes to cater for the needs of the poor people who usually fall outside the formal banking services. (Akhtar, 1996, 1998; Hassan and Alamgir, 2002 Al-Harran, 1995, 1996, 1999; Al- Harran, 1990; Al-ZamZami and Grace, 2000; Dhumale and Sapcanin, 1998;)believe that Islamic banking can apply diverse financial tools and instruments together with other available mechanisms such as charity, waqaf and zakat, which are can be in tegrated and applied into microfinance programmes to promote entrepreneurship amongst poor people and subsequently help in poverty alleviation. Asyraf wajdi, (2008) highlighted the relevance of microfinance as a globally accepted practice to Islamic banks. The Islamic banking system has an in-built dimension that encourages financial services and activities to the poor people, as it resides within a financial channel strengthened by the forces of Shariah injunctions. These Shariah injunctions combine Islamic financial services with genuine concern for alleviation and eradication of the poverty, equal distribution of wealth and social justice at the same time as prohibiting involvement in non-shariah compliant and illegal activities, which are detrimental to social and environmental well-being. Shahinpoor (2008) has described that the principles and practices of Islamic banking and microfinancing, and also demonstrated an important link between the two systems. Both microfinanc e and Islamic banking institutions are based on the belief that everyone in the community is entitled to economic justice. Both believe in interest and collateral-free loans and believe that everyone, including the poor, are creditworthy and should be given the chance to participate in domestic economic activities. Beside that he also demonstrated that the gap and differences between the current practices of Islamic banking and microfinance could be eliminated. The practices from each could be combined properly. Essentially, that is, Islamic banking practices should be combined with interest free microfinance. Chapter 3 Methodology This study applies qualitative methods as its study approach. The methodology will be used in this study is first to describe the basic principles and instruments of Islamic banking and microfinance as well as two survey will be conducted one for Islamic banks and microfinance institutions officials so to test their level of understanding and applying of Islamic principles as micro finance instruments and the other one for micro finance participants of Islamic banks and micro finance to test their level satisfaction on services provided by both practices and later to show the link between the two financial practices. In general, it is known that the two practices are not suitable since microfinance practice allows interest on loans and Islamic banking prohibits interest payment based on Islamic law. Both practices, however, promote fairness, equality and justice for all people of the society and encourage entrepreneurship by giving free-collateral- loans to the poor people. The two practices, therefore, are theoretically and ideologically can be linked. This study presents that they are also can be practically linked. Methods and principles of Islamic banking and finance The Islamic alternative to interest free loans and financing is profit-loss sharing principles (PLS).In other words, participants of financial markets should share in profits and risks of loss. Islam considers profit-loss sharing, rather than interest, to be closer to its sense of ethics, social justice, fairness and equity. Both parties, the lender and the Brower share the risk of the investment as well as the profit from it. Profit and loss sharing of the investment addresses the asymmetric information problems that exist in the conventional banking and financing system. There are basically two risk-sharing principles practiced by Islam banking. Both principles are based on one objective: the sharing of profits through joint participation. These two practices and principles are called Mudarabah and Musharakah. between these two, Mudarabah is the most commonly applied risk-sharing method used by Islamic banking and finance (Lewis and Algaoud, 2001). A Mudarabah can be defined a s a contract between two parties whereby one party provides the capital and another party provides the entrepreneurial abilities. In Mudaraba, the financier or the capital provider does not participate in the management of the business as well as collateral should not be required from entrepreneur. However, the lender is entitled to a percentage of the profit or loss that resulted from the business. Profit has to be shared in a percentage basis and not base on a lump-sum amount and there is no guaranteed rate of return and the percentage must be mentioned prior to execution of the contract . In addition, the lender is not liable for losses beyond the fund that contributed to the business. In the other hand, the entrepreneur is not liable for losses beyond loss of time and effort used in running the business unless it is proven that the loss is a result of herhis mismanagement. Another profit and loss-sharing principle used in Islamic banking and finance is called Musharakah or pa rtnership. Under Musharakah agreement, the entrepreneur and the capital provider jointly contribute to the capital according to pre-determined proportion. The two participants are partners in case of profit or loss. Mudarabah and Musharakah are considered as a two pillars or a cornerstone of Islamic banking and finance according to Ariff (1982). In both practice, the risk is shared by both parties of the transaction and they have to obey all Islamic rules and restrictions. moreover both parties involved in the transaction, could not invest or engage in any business that is contradict with the Islamic ethical standards and values. However, there are, alternative methods to Mudarabah and Musharakah. These methods are less risky and are applied by Islamic banks if the profit-loss sharing principles could not be used. While there are so many alternative methods applied by Islamic banks and capital providers, I only discuss in this paper three of them that I believe are related to this study. Among these methods is Murabaha, or cost plus profit margin another one is called Qard al-hasaneh, or benevolence loans which is free interest loans and the third one is Ijara, or leasing contract. Murabaha does not fall under a profit-loss sharing principle. Instead, it is based on cost plus profit margin. As such, the bank or the facilitator posses the product on behalf of the customer and then adds a percentage to the cost and facilitates it to the customer. The customer then promises to pay it back in a pre-specified date or base on installments. In Murabaha, the bank or the facilitator behave like an intermediary between buyer and seller and does not share in profits or losses. The risk therefore, is much lower under Murabaha method if compared to the Mudarabah or Musharakah methods. Initially , the profit margin might pretend like another form of interest charged by the bank but in another name. Her up to this point we may arise a question like, If interes t is not allowed in Islamic banking, then how Murabaha could be justified? The answer for this critical question could be as follow Murabaha is justified in islam because in a Murabaha transaction, a good is bought and sold by the bank for profit and the transaction is not burley exchange of money. In this transaction the bank is taking a risk by buying the commodity. The transaction is not complete unless the customer buys the commodity from the bank and the customer may change his/her mind and reject to buy the product. This makes Murabaha perfectly legitimate according to the Islamic law (Wilson, 1990). There is only one form of Islamic loan called Qard al-hasan, is interest free loan that the Quran encourages Muslims to make to people who need them (Ahmad et al., 1983). As such, the bank is allowed to charge a service charge for facility of the loan. The bank or the financier of the Qard al-hasan not only provides financial support to the borrower but also provides moral supp ort. These kind of loans are often given to charitable institutions or people with sudden need for funds (death, natural disaster and etc.). Ijara or leasing principle is when the bank purchases the product and leases it to the client for a certain number of period. The lease arrangements, their terms and conditions, are agreed by both parties pre-execution of the contract . In some Ijara contracts, the client has an option to buy the commodity from the bank. In this case, the lease payments could use to the purchase of the product (Lewis and Algaoud, 2001). Research Hypothesis In order to examine the viability of Islamic banking principles to provide microfinance as well as the link between Islamic banking and microfinance the following hypotheses set so that it can be tested in this research. Islamic banking rules allow microfinance institutions to provide free-interest loans to the poor. Islamic banking rules allow microfinance institutions to provide free-collateral loans to the poor. Islamic banking rules allow the microfinance institutions and borrowers to agree on a certain percentage of profit per period before the loan is finalized.
